Less talk. More tape.

Video, interviews and media strategy for New Zealand businesses, then the high-pressure sport work that trained me for it. No adjectives doing the heavy lifting.

MortgageHQYouTube and video, 2024 to 2025

Nine years of videos. Then 11 months people actually watched.

Video strategy, interviews and editing

2.2mYouTube views in 11 months

Situation

A mortgage advisory with good advice, a YouTube channel and 9 years of content behind it. Total views: 2.7 million.

What I did

Produced and edited the channel's video. Ran an interview series with former Cabinet Minister Maurice Williamson and the chief economists of Westpac, ASB, Kiwibank and BNZ.

For the business

In the founder's words: “Our leads got cheaper and more consistent, and the content became an asset the new owners wanted when we sold.” Andrew Malcolm, founder and former owner.

Attention

2.2 million views in 11 months. Nearly as many as the previous 9 years combined, and about 8 times the channel's old monthly average.

Context

I worked with MortgageHQ from September 2024 to the end of 2025. These figures cover 23 September 2024, when I started on the channel, to August 2025: the YouTube Studio data MortgageHQ shared with me. Daily views took off from January 2025 (chart below). NZ Adviser ranked it the No. 1 brokerage in 2024 and in the top five in 2025 (source). One of its advisers, Zhiyang Cheng, was the No. 1 adviser in NZ Adviser's Top Advisers 2025 (source).

The ConversationsMortgageHQ, 2025

Four bank chief economists, made worth watching.

Host, interviewer

11episodes, 74 questions on the record

Situation

Interest rates, inflation and the housing market matter to every MortgageHQ client, and most people would rather watch paint dry than an economics briefing.

What I did

Hosted a run of interviews with Mike Jones (BNZ), Nick Tuffley (ASB), Jarrod Kerr (Kiwibank) and Kelly Eckhold (Westpac). Asked the questions a homeowner would, in the order they'd ask them.

What happened

More than 40,000 views across the series by October 2026. Watch them, question by question.

Subdivision Advocacy NZ2026, ongoing

A documentary series on what homeowners are being charged, and by whom.

Editorial and graphics lead

5Films released, more in production

Situation

An advocacy group lobbying central government over infrastructure costs passed to homeowners by Auckland Council, Watercare and Vector. A complicated story that needs to be understood fast, by people with no time.

What I'm doing

Leading the editorial and graphics on a documentary series that turns the numbers into something a minister, or a homeowner, can follow in one viewing.

Lynley Dodd made Hairy Maclary unforgettable. Craig has that same storytelling instinct for complicated issues. He finds the heart of the matter and puts the arrow exactly where it needs to go.

Anyone can make a technical video. Very few can make it land. That's the magic. People finally understand. And the videos provoke. That's the point.

NZ Breakers2019 to 2023

A basketball club, a pandemic, and one very good night for Starship.

Media manager. Creator, writer and director of #UNBREAKABLE

$656,700Raised for the Starship Foundation

Situation

A professional club that had to keep its sponsors and fans engaged while COVID moved the whole operation to Australia for two years.

What I did

Media strategy, player and coach preparation, publicity and crisis communications. Created, wrote and directed #UNBREAKABLE, the club's documentary series. Season 1 screened on Prime and Sky Sport. Season 2 followed 154 days in Australia. Shaped sponsorships. In 2020 I co-created a celebrity basketball game and helped draft the contracts that made it happen.

What happened

Six60, Irene van Dyk and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck on court, 6,254 people at Spark Arena, and $656,700 raised for the Starship Foundation. It became an annual event. Source.

After coaching for 15 years, in three different continents, Craig has been the best media manager I have worked with.

Mody MaorNBA assistant coach, Dallas Mavericks

Craig for me is the definition of media savvy. He is fluent in all dialects of the media language and his experience is second to none.

Joseph ParkerDuco Events, 2014 to 2018

A heavyweight nobody knew, to a stadium fight with Anthony Joshua.

Media and narrative director

#1Top trending New Zealander, Google NZ, 2016

Situation

A young New Zealand heavyweight, five fights in, and the public was taking little interest. A country that mostly watches rugby.

What I did

Ran media and narrative for Duco Events. Built the story, shaped the sponsorships, wrote the releases, handled the press conferences, and led crisis communications across New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the UK and the US.

What happened

In 2016, an Olympic year, Parker was the top trending New Zealander in Google NZ's Year in Search. In 2018 he fought Anthony Joshua for the unified world heavyweight titles at Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Source.

He has devised clever media strategies which always work. This has helped me relax in the media and come across much more confident.

Carlos UlbergMedia advice, 2023

The fighter who called before he was famous.

Media advice

3:45Round one, UFC 327. The title.

Situation

In 2023 Carlos Ulberg was a little-known mixed martial artist. He wanted to be ready for the cameras before they turned up.

What I did

A professional photo shoot, with the images used by publications around the world. Media advice, a deep dive into what worked, and what didn't, in turning Joseph Parker's profile into money.

What happened

In April 2026 he won the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 327. He blew out his knee in the opening minutes against Jiří Procházka, found the courage to keep going and knocked him out in the first round. Probably the most inspirational comeback I've seen. Like watching Rocky, except he's a Kiwi. He did the fighting. The cameras did turn up.

Craig's a pain in the arse in a good way!! Persistent and brimming with ideas. He thinks outside the square to make sure his material makes it on air.
